Foot & Ankle
foot & ankle
The health of your feet and ankles is crucial to your mobility and independence. Here at The Gait Center we understand this and focus our treatment around this concept. Improper foot alignment leads to total body imbalance. The foot needs sufficient mobility while maintaining stability. Mobility is necessary for absorbing the ground reaction force of the body while foot stability is needed as a stable base for the body. The foot needs the capacity to bear body weight and act as a stable lever to propel the body forward. This function requires pronation control of the subtalar joint. Without a stable base, the rest of your joints will lose their optimal alignment which can lead to postural changes, musculoskeletal injuries, and/or overuse syndromes.
Our therapists do a very thorough evaluation to assess the mobility and stability of your feet and ankles. We have a 1:1 ratio with our patients which allows us to spend quality time performing therapeutic massage, stretching, and joint mobilization on our patients to improve their deficits. Stretching and stabilization exercises will be taught for home, as well as, performed in the clinic. The Gait Center is equipped with a custom designed ramp and stairs system, extra-long parallel bars and plenty of open floor space for balance and obstacle training. Your therapist stays with you throughout your session to fine tune your activities, to optimize your results from physical therapy.
Your therapist will not only address the physical needs of your foot and ankle but also assess your footwear and insert needs. We have close professional relationships with local shoe stores and orthotists who can further help support foot and ankle misalignment issues. Better alignment of the foot leads to better efficiency and muscular balance throughout the body.
Our goal here at The Gait Center is to improve your overall posture, stability, and independence which, we believe, starts from the ground up!
